I like to think that whenever I look at stuff (people, buildings, forces of nature, w/e) my brain takes notes on some sort of subconscious level and I inadvertently learn how to draw these things better. As far as human faces go, I've spent a lot of time staring at my own face, and so my own features frequently appear in the random faces I draw. Faces of people in my family have also probably contributed to the stock of features I draw from. It's a strange thing to experience the insinuation of someone else's face into the miasma of visages I draw. It was also a strangely rewarding feeling to draw a face I spend lots and lots of time looking at, as if I'd already done all the hardest work and was just committing it to paper.
Hopefully the future holds many more opportunities to explore this new addition to my life and mind.
