This is a painting from my increasingly distant past. It is loosely based on the surrounding I found myself living in in a colorful part of the local metropolis. This is one of the few works of mine where I incorporate very realistic elements directly from observation of physical phenomena with the sinewy artifacts of my imagination. Namely the three buildings on the left were drawn from intermittent glances out the window. Similarly some of the trash on the ground was also garnered from actual pieces of detritus I was made to stare at. These sorts of pictures make me wonder whether the nonreal elements incorporated in them are related to the aspects more rooted in reality. Or, if they are just convenient squiggly forms put there to fill up space. The general lack of concreteness and specificity to the imagined forms tends to push me towards the conclusion of convenience. As far as personal meaning goes, the most significant purpose of this painting is a further exploration of brown, specifically burn sienna, and its importance in the palette of reality.
