Ah well, another week another painting. I suppose this is a tribute to many childhood voyages abroad, the primary purpose of which always seemed to be visiting big stone buildings which a lot of very dirty and very poor people spent inordinate amounts of time building to please less dirty and very rich people. I suppose some of them are impressive in their sheer size and complexity and growing uselessness except as landmarks of the past. Meh.
My favorite part about this one is something that a picture of the painting can't really being to capture. Depending on how much light is falling on the actual painting certain parts disappear into darkness. It is an interesting emulation of the way light actually behaves in the real world. Taking a picture of it in overly bright sunlight actually made parts (like the windows) look might better than they do in reality.
